Introduction:
This is me. Stephen Davison. Born 19th July 1980. I live in the city of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England, but since I finished University I'm looking for somewhere else.
This picture was taken in a passport booth sometime last year on a bad day and I can honestly say I look better now. I mysteriously gained access to the University of Sheffield, and recently completed a three year course in Computer Science. Take a look at my CV if you like: CV Word document
What I like doing in my spare time:
I like doing lots of different things in my spare time, including going out with friends, watching tv, watching films, using my pc, playing computer games, anime, and playing the guitar.
Its not like I'm good at the guitar or anything, I can just get by enough to play a couple of excellent songs that people have made, one of my favorite composers being Nobuo Uematsu, who created music for the Final Fantasy Games.
I like doing quite a few things on my PC which includes using the internet, playing computer games and other random stuff. I like to play a wide variety of games, and like to find out about cool games I may have missed. Some of my favorite games include Halflife, Max Payne, Quake 1 and 3, Sonic the Hedgehog, Wipeout, Arcadians, Moria, Might and Magic 6, the Final Fantasy Series, and many more. Another game called Mortuum has also captured my imagination.
In the past I have done other things on my pc, such as attempting to create quake and doom levels, creating backgrounds for windows, making music, and playing on the Nightmare MUD. I've lost this once really big MUD addiction due to being ceased on NM in a bad way. I still urge you to take a look at what it is though... You might like it.
I own a Nintendo 64, a Mega Drive, an Amiga 500, and a couple of BBC's though I usually only use the PC. I used to own Goldeneye but I sold it because I was too stuck and I currently am enjoying Hey you pikachu! for N64, and having difficulty with Wipeout 64.
One of the coolest things about games is that I have discovered that Winamp may be run at the same time, and I can listen to my music collection easily, and not have to change any CD's.
While I am not on the computer or doing other things, I like watching terrestial TV's finest 5 channels available to me. There are many of my favorite programs but I mostly like Sci-fi and humour. This includes the Star Trek series' The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. I am also interested in Babylon 5, Space Above and Beyond, The Simpsons, Xena, Adventures of Hercules, tv adverts (!), and just about every other sci-fi series on tv. (Apart from the joke which resides on moon base alpha.)
I also like watching many films as they both come on TV and at the Cinemas.
I am interested in the discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. I have got a collection of most of them but since the paperback prices went from £4.99 to £5.99 I am bought the recent hardback releases by kind relatives.
As of late I have been interested in going out with a group of friends to pubs and clubs, drinking and dancing terribly to 70's, 80's and recent greats. Close friends have learnt from their mistakes and don't go to karaoke any more in my company. I think I'm getting better though, really.. :)
I enjoy playing pool, which I am currently getting better at, though I keep on losing.
A really big thing that I'm getting into now is anime and manga. This had been quite a low priority on my things to watch on tv list, but if on the off chance it was ever on I WOULD watch it. Now, since a friend showed me the glories of Ranma 1/2, I am getting deeper, and deeper into all different series of anime including:
Ranma 1/2:
This series is all about a boy called ranma who gets affected with an old chinese curse, which causes hime to turn into a girl every time he gets splashed with cold water. Oh, and he's engaged. Oh, and his dad is a panda. And everything that could possibly go wrong does, including the fact that when he's a girl, he has a couple of admirers... Try and watch it or read it. Its worth every penny.
Urusei Yatsura:
This series is all about a pervert who gets accidentally engaged to an alien princess from outer space and then has lots of wonderful problems, especially as he already has a girlfriend. Oh yeah, plus his new fiancee can fly and shoot lightning bolts at him.
Neon Genesis Evangelion:
This series is really complex, but from what I can tell, these kids have to pilot these great big armoured things that look like giant robots to defend their city. Its actually pretty good.
Ghost in the Shell:
This series is about a woman cyborg that is part of a special secret agency that is against crime and terrorism. Its really cool, and has futuristic weapons and stuff including something called thermo-optic shielding which is a kind of cloaking field, and looks really good in the film.
Akira:
Nothing I can say about this film could possibly justify it. It has a random bloke who gets amazing supernatrual powers and then goes a bit mad really. I can't explain it enough.. Watch it.
Import Japanese Games:
I don't know why, but I love loads of japanese games.. The japanese are now gods of the rpg, and have almost perfected a manga look in games. If only Sheep dog 'n' wolf people would make a anime style game!!!
Notable games which are really good include: Puyo puyo (all versions), Chu Chu rocket (dreamcast), the Final Fantasy Series, All SNES Ranma games (especially the puzzle one!), Neon Genesis Evangelion for N64 (looks amazing), and Zelda 64 (Not import, but cool anyways), GASP, and Hey, you pikachu!.
South Park - Kenny:
One of the few reasons I used to watch South Park was for Kenny, the guy with the poor family who dies almost all the time. Face it, the guy's IMMORTAL so however many times you try, you can't kill him totally since he will come back to life no matter how many times he gets eaten by rats or gets fried by aliens. I don't watch it any more because channel 4 took it off for almost a year and I lost interest (Got into true Anime)...
The best sport ever: POWER SUMO
While at Breeze '98, a music festival in Leeds that I went to, there was a stall hidden amongst the extortionate burger and donut sellers, next to the bouncy castle, with a padded mat and two people wearing large costumes that made them quite a bit fatter. Seeing a couple duking it out and jumping around on each other as in wrestling, an argument broke out among about 5 of us about who could beat who. In the end only my friend Stephen and I were the most optimistic about it and threatened each other in a friendly way. Putting on the well padded and weighted suits and helmets provided, we walked to a padded mat about 2 or 3 metres across and stood in opposing corners and we charged at each other and I got knocked down. The suits make it almost impossible to get up since they come down past the knees. After about 20 times I worked out how to get up but not before the end of the fight. We had caught a massive crowd of people who were walking past and both had loyal support. One of the funniest things about this sport was that once one of you was down, the other could jump on them. This looks terrible punishment but doesn't hurt at all and is really quite fun as you can't move but impress the crowd by taking more and more punishment. One of the main flaws with this was that the mat was not large enough and we carried on the fight into the tarmac path that was nearby and swung each other about by incredible amounts. The action and fighting was exceptional fun and this could very easily become the best spectator sport around. I would have a circular arena that was exceptionally bouncy and the suits would need to be alterable to certain levels of height and weight of person. It's great fun and people at any level can play. To add more interest I would have the walls of the arena bouncy so they would act like the bumpers in pinball and imitate the ropes in wrestling. Sometime in the future it would be great to start a club for this sport. Might turn into a weird fight club thing though.
